Is the Green Deal available in my area?

It's available in England, Scotland and Wales, the Green deal is not a Government programme but provided by the private sector.

Am I obligated to have work done if I have an assesment and get a quote?

No, the assesment provides you with an obligation-free recommendation. You are free to seek as many quotes and take advantage of as many or as few improvements as you wish.

What is the Golden Rule?

The Golden rule limits the amount of Green Deal finance that you can borrow, to the estimated energy bill savings from the improvements to your home. This aims to keep your energy bills no higher than they would have been without a Green Deal.

What is the maximum amount of work I can have done?

Your Assessor will recommend which improvements are appropriate and you can undertake any combination of them. The Golden Rule limits the amount of finance available, so if the installation costs are likely to exceed the estimated savings you would need to pay the remainder up front, or choose to install a different package.

Is extra support available?

Yes, if you are in an older proerty, or if you receive certain income-related benefits, you may qualify for extra financial assistance throught the Energy Company Obligation (ECO). Your Assessor will be able to advise you on this.

What happens if I sell my house?

All subsequent payments will be transferred to the new bill-payer.

Am I protected against poor work?

Only use companies that have the "Green Deal Approved" Quality Mark, if you are unhappy with the work you need to talk to your Provider first. If your complaint or enquiry cannot be resolved by your Provider, you may be able to speak to the Green Deal Ombudsman depending on the complaint. Their website is

In England and Wales only; the cashback amount is based on the typical energy savings achieved by each measure.

Am I eligible if I do the works but fund them myself rather than through the Green Deal?

In England and Wales only; yes - you can fund the improvement through a Green Deal Plan or pay in other ways, but you must first get a Green Deal Assesment, use a Green deal Provider to arrange the installation and use a Green Deal Approved Installer.
